A Message from the Principals

Deep and abiding thanks to students and families and staff members for persevering through a “new and different” Trimester 1 teaching and learning experience. We appreciate each and every one of you who have overcome access and technology challenges as well as the loss of face-to-face connections with peers.

Our teachers are making adjustments in Canvas and Zoom classes for Trimester 2, which begins on Monday December 14. Teachers are planning to make some revisions for ease of accessibility and communication of expectations for students in Canvas as well as continuing to review and refine engagement strategies in Zoom classes. Teacher office hours have been cancelled for December 9 and 10 to provide 8 hours for essential Trimester 2 planning and preparation next week.

We offer reminders and access to important information in this weekly message and invite you to click on resources below to view a Wraparound Holiday Services newsletter, Kelly Student and Family Services newsletter and a link to print a copy of a fundraising ticket to be used at the West 11th Papa’s Pizza on December 10 for Kelly Middle School.

Today we are also announcing our Kelly Middle School Spirit Week in an article below. Please take a look and support your student to participate as you choose, so we can have some fun and increase engagement and connections in Advisory classes during the first week of Trimester 2.

As this year continues, please let us know how we may be of service with regard to your students’ individual needs during Comprehensive Distance Learning.

Spirit WEEK December 14 – 18

We are excited to kick off the second trimester with PILOTS Spirit Week! On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, students have the option to participate in the theme for the day. The more participation, the more fun. During Advisory classes, students will be able to earn prizes for participation throughout the week.

Monday: Colors of the Rainbow Day–Wear one color or all of the colors!

Tuesday: Crazy Hat or Crazy Hair Day–Have fun messing up your hair or putting on your wackiest hat.

Wednesday: No Advisory classes/ Asynchronous work

Thursday: Holiday Wear–What is your favorite holiday? Dig out an ugly sweater or a past Halloween costume. All holidays welcome.

Friday: Virtual Vacation Day–Escape from the confines of your home; change your Zoom background to a place that you would like to be. Dress like you are on vacation too!

Flex Wednesday Student Expectations

We would like to remind you and your students about expectations for student engagement and attendance on “Flex Day,” which will always be listed on the calendar above this message.

Our teachers provide students with work to complete and Zoom links to attend classes in Canvas. On Flex Day (usually a Wednesday) each and every student should log into Canvas and open each and every course to complete missing assignments and any new work teachers have provided for students to complete on Flex Days. Our next Flex Day will be December 16.

Canvas Support for Families

The best way to monitor and to support student engagement and learning is to become an ‘Observer’ in your students’ Canvas courses. Please use the links below to assist you to navigate in Canvas as “Observers” in our learning management system. This can serve as an important parent-student-school connection routine. This will also be an important opportunity to monitor and to support student engagements, learning, and progress this year during Trimester 1 Comprehensive Distance Learning model.

Kelly Pilots

At Kelly, we use a unifying framework to help guide the work we do with students. We want ALL students to be able to demonstrate these concepts before moving to high school. We have captured these concepts in the following acronym that also dovetails with our aeronautic history.

P = PERSEVERE

I = IMAGINE

L = LEARN

O = OWN

T = TEAM

S = SUPPORT

Our teachers will address these concepts in advisory as well as throughout their curriculum when helping students grow into contributing and compassionate citizens of the world. We invite you

to use the same words and concepts when working with your students at home and in the community.
