Notes from Kelly Middle School

Canvas Access for Families and Canvas Notifications

Beginning in October, Eugene school district 4j will send grade updates out to parents every two weeks from our CANVAS learning management system.  This is an important reminder to let you know about how students are making progress in classes; however, please know the following:

Grades on Canvas will be updated every two weeks. This report is meant as a progress update and is not an official grade report. The grades for each course are updated as often as possible but may not reflect all assignments to date. Please reach out to your child's teacher(s) via email with any questions you may have about your student’s progress.

New Process for Parent Observers in Canvas:

Parent and Guardian emails will come directly from Synergy and pair with their students(s) in Canvas Learning Management System. For all users, new and pre-existing, you will need to go to the 4j Canvas Login page and select Canvas for Families, enter the email you have on file with Kelly  and select Forgot Password. The system will then walk you through claiming your account and password. If you had an account with a different email, it will no longer be active. The email record on the parent screen in Synergy must be accurate. Supporting instructions are found on the login page as well as a resource linked  here

Move-a-thon Fundraising event schedules for October 9

The Kelly parent group is organizing our annual move-a-thon fundraiser that will provide money for school programs and grade-level field trips.  This  is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Students get friends, family and neighbors to sponsor them with pledges and students try to move for as many laps as they can to earn rewards for Advisory class groups. We will be using an electronic fund raising platform to raise funds and keep students safe with your help and volunteer support. Please share this link with your family and friends to support our programs at Kelly–THANK YOU!

Lockdown DRILL October 10 at 1:30 pm (Standard Response Protocols)

Students and staff have been practicing Standard Response Protocols for safety at school and other community spaces. We have EVACUATED (fire drill) twice to the turf field and practiced a SECURE protocol for dangerous circumstances in the neighborhood. Our LOCKDOWN procedures will be practiced next week. The protocol calls for LOCKS. LIGHTS. OUT-of-SIGHT if there is a threat inside the building. More information on SRP safety routines will be shared at this month’s parent meeting (see item below)

Intermediate Band Class still has OPEN seats for YOUR Student

Band Director Eryne Ige will be serving our Grade 7 players in an Intermediate Band class that met for the first time on Thursday September 12.  If your student would like to join our Intermediate Band class, please send an email of interest to our scheduling and records assistant, Christie Ferris at ferris_c@4j.lane.edu for consideration regarding scheduling conflicts. “HEY Band. . . ?”

Kelly Parent Group meets October 10 at 6 pm in the Kelly Library

Our monthly parent group meeting is scheduled for the second Thursday of every month. Please join our parent group for an hour of interesting information that will include a monthly report and Q & A with Principal John Wayland. This month, Mr. Wayland will share information about Standard Response Protocols for safety in our school and community spaces.

Kelly Middle School Site Council meets Thursday October 24 from 4:00-5:30 pm

It is vital for school operations to have a sensible, working Site Council that has participation from parents and staff. Meetings are scheduled for the fourth Thursday of every month and will be held  after school in the Kelly Library. If you are interested in being a member of our working Site Council, please email our office manager, Laura Pacheco at moncadapacheco_l@4j.lane.edu

Would your student participate in an AFTER SCHOOL program at Kelly?

Survey of Interest from River Road Park and Recreation District linked here.

At River Road Park District, we are always looking for ways to enhance the experiences and opportunities available to our community’s children. We are excited to share that we are exploring the possibility of launching a new after-school program specifically designed for middle school students!

To make this program as beneficial and engaging as possible, we plan to utilize Kelly Middle School as the off-site, but walkable, location. However, to ensure that we create a program that truly benefits our students, we need your input. We are currently gauging interest from families to determine if we have enough participants to move forward. Our goal is to reach a minimum of 20 students to initiate the program.

If we meet this goal, we plan to kick off the program in October. Your feedback is crucial in helping us shape the activities and schedule to best suit your child's needs. The survey will only take a few minutes, and your responses will remain confidential. Thank you for your support and participation. We look forward to potentially offering this exciting opportunity and will keep you updated on our progress. Please take a moment to complete our brief survey by clicking the link below.
