Reminder about school policies

Lunch-Time Food Deliveries:
In alignment with the 4J School District Wellness Policy, food deliveries for students during lunch may not include soda or other sugar-sweetened beverages. Additionally, food deliveries must be made in person by a parent or guardian; deliveries from food delivery apps or third-party services are not permitted. These deliveries can be disruptive to the school environment. Families who wish to bring food for their student are welcome to eat with them in a designated alternate location. Thank you for your cooperation and partnership in supporting a healthy and focused school community.

Tardy Policy (per class, each week):
  • First Tardy: Warning
  • Second Tardy: Lunch Detention and a Level 2 referral written by the teacher, including parent contact
This cycle resets each week.
Repeated tardies over time will result in a parent meeting and the development of an attendance support plan to help the student be successful.

Skipping Policy:
We are running a daily attendance report to monitor student attendance throughout the day. If a student is marked unexcused absent from a class but is present for all other classes that day, the student will:
  • Receive a Level 2 referral for skipping class
  • Be assigned a lunch work session to make up missed instructional time and work
Our goal is to ensure students are present and engaged in all classes and to addres

Student of the Month

Every month starting in January 2026, grade level teams will select 6 students from each grade who exemplify the P.I.L.O.T.S. values of Kelly Middle School. Families will receive a formal letter sharing that their student was selected and students will be recognized amongst their peers in a school-wide announcement. They will also get a certificate and a group photo will be placed in display case to honor their achievement.

Students are selected based on the following P.I.L.O.T.S. values:
Perseverance: I keep going, even when it’s hard. I use strategies, ask for help, and stay focused long enough to understand.

Imagination: I use creativity to think of new ideas or solutions.

Learning: I grow my brain by practicing, ask questions, use feedback, and fix mistakes.

Owning: I strive for excellence in my work and personal habits. I engage with peers on class activities. I am responsible for the words I speak. I show up to school and my classes ready to learn.

Teamwork: I help others, listen, solve problems together, and making sure the group succeeds as a whole.

Support: I care for myself and for others. I respectfully and responsibly supporting the well-being of others. I contribute to a positive community and climate at Kelly Middle School.

Student Government:
Students are planning a Val-O-Gram activity and fundraiser for Feb. 13. They are requesting donations of chocolate or other small candies to attach to the cards being sent out to students. They also need three adult volunteers to help monitor the tables from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Feb. 10-12. Please reach out if you are available to help.
Some requested items:
Hershey's Kisses
Small-size chocolate bars (NO PEANUTBUTTER)
Small lollipops

Wondering About Winter Weather?
When winter weather hits, schools may be closed or delayed or buses may use snow routes due to snow and ice. The school district decides early in the morning whether there is a need to change the school schedule or bus routes. These decisions are made districtwide and are the same for every 4J school.
How to find out if there is a change:
  • Email or text message sent to you from the district
  • Check the district website at 4j.lane.edu
  • Follow 4J on social media: Facebook and Instagram
  • Tune in to local radio and television news stations
If there is a school closure or other change, the school district will announce it before 6:30 a.m. If schools and buses are on their regular schedule, there will NOT be an announcement.
Parents of students who ride school buses that have alternate snow routes have been informed of what to do. Snow route information is available on the snow routes page.
If school is in session, families are encouraged to consider road conditions in their areas and make their own decisions based on safety. Parents’ individual decisions about school attendance will be honored.

Kelly Middle School Fragrance-free Zone
Several of our staff and students react to fragrances in the environment at school. In the past, we have been a fragrance-free school to respect those staff and students who experience negative health reactions to fragrances in the environment.
Please speak with your student about NOT bringing ANY sprays to school and not using ANY spray products during the school day. This is a courtesy to others. We hope to have your support for a fragrance-free school environment for all staff and students.
