"Strength in Every Step" is our student-chosen theme for this year. We can again make a difference in the lives of people and their families who are battling cancer and celebrate those who have won the battle. Kelly Middle School and Howard Elementary are joining together for the 3rd year in a row to raise money for Relay for Life. More information to come!!!

Heat Illness Watch-Prevention is Key!
As weather starts to warm up please know the signs and symptoms of heat illness and keep an eye on your students. Encourage students to bring water bottles and wear loose-fitting, breathable clothing to school.

Walk + Roll
On May 11th - 15th, our school is participating in the Walk+Roll to School Challenge. We’re asking every family to use active transportation like walking, biking, scooting, skating or shared
transportation like the bus or carpooling to improve our students’ health, learning and
independence and to improve safety and traffic around our school and our impact on the
environment! We have great prizes to encourage our students to participate!
If driving is your only option, you could “Park and Stride” by parking a short walk away from
school and walking with your child the rest of the way. Students who ride the bus, carpool, or
park and stride still be able to enter the raffle for prizes.

8th graders will be celebrating the end of Middle School with a fun trip to Bullwinkle's in Wilsonville. Bullwinkle's offers bowling, mini-golf, go karts, laser tag, bumper boats, ropes course, and a pizza buffet! We hope that all students will attend, but will notify parents if there is a significant safety issue that may affect their participation.

Pause on After-school Math Tutoring:
Math tutoring is paused at this time due to low participation. We plan to start up again in mid-May. We do offer Math supports during Advisory periods 3 days a week that any student may access with their Math teachers.

State Testing Dates and Opt-Out Options

The opt-out form can be filled out online. See the link below. See below for opt-out forms.

May 18-22: Math test in Math classes

Please note that this year we are testing in regular classes--there will be no special schedule for testing. Please support your student by encouraging them to get a good night's sleep and eat breakfast.

At Kelly Middle School, we have set a School Improvement Goal to improve our scores on the Math state assessments. When students opt-out, it counts as not passing on our State School Report Card ; opting out does not affect any individual test results or records. We hope that most of our students will participate in the testing this year to show us how much they have learned and improved. Students who do opt-out will be given an alternative math assessment so that teachers can measure their progress over time.

If you would like to opt your student out of any of these, please complete and return the corresponding form to the front office.

Fidgets and Toys at School --Update

Fidgets and Toys at School
Fidgets such as Nee Doh's are becoming very popular at school. Fidgets can be helpful for many students to help them stay focused and possibly reduce anxiety. Unfortunately, they can also create issues at school when not used for their functional purpose. We have noticed students throwing them, breaking them open or cutting them open to expose the sticky inside, and also stealing from each other causing disruptions in classrooms and hallways. Other common toys at school such as stuffies and tech decks have also led to similar issues.

When a student is not using the fidget for its functional purpose or if causes a disruption to their learning or others at school, it will be confiscated by the staff member and brought to the office. A guardian can make arrangements to come pick up the item from the main office.

We realize that some students need sensory tools to be more successful, and we want to continue to support the individual needs of our students as much as possible. Please reinforce these expectations with your student.

Annual Permissions

Please ensure your student’s annual permissions form is up to date. This form allows us to confirm whether students may participate in walking field trips and view age-appropriate digital content (such as educational videos and films) as part of their learning. If you need to update this form, please reach out to our registrar in the front office.

Reminder about school policies

Tardy Policy (per class, each week):
  • First Tardy: Warning
  • Second Tardy: Lunch Detention and a Level 2 referral written by the teacher, including parent contact
This cycle resets each week.
Repeated tardies over time will result in a parent meeting and the development of an attendance support plan to help the student be successful.

Skipping Policy:
We are running a daily attendance report to monitor student attendance throughout the day. If a student is marked unexcused absent from a class but is present for all other classes that day, the student will:
  • Receive a Level 2 referral for skipping class
  • Be assigned a lunch work session to make up missed instructional time and work
Our goal is to ensure students are present and engaged in all class

May Students of the Month Awarded

Every month starting in January 2026, grade- level teams will select 6 students from each grade who exemplify the P.I.L.O.T.S. values of Kelly Middle School. Families will receive a formal letter sharing that their student was selected and students will be recognized amongst their peers in a school-wide announcement. They will also get a certificate and a group photo will be placed in display case to honor their achievement.

Students are selected based on the following P.I.L.O.T.S. values:
Perseverance: I keep going, even when it’s hard. I use strategies, ask for help, and stay focused long enough to understand.

Imagination: I use creativity to think of new ideas or solutions.

Learning: I grow my brain by practicing, ask questions, use feedback, and fix mistakes.

Owning: I strive for excellence in my work and personal habits. I engage with peers on class activities. I am responsible for the words I speak. I show up to school and my classes ready to learn.

Teamwork: I help others, listen, solve problems together, and making sure the group succeeds as a whole.

Support: I care for myself and for others. I respectfully and responsibly supporting the well-being of others. I contribute to a positive community and climate at Kelly Middle School.

Kelly Middle School Fragrance-free Zone
Several of our staff and students react to fragrances in the environment at school. In the past, we have been a fragrance-free school to respect those staff and students who experience negative health reactions to fragrances in the environment.
Please speak with your student about NOT bringing ANY sprays to school and not using ANY spray products during the school day. This is a courtesy to others. We hope to have your support for a fragrance-free school environment for all staff and students.
