DIGITAL RESPONSIBILITY & MACBOOK CARE

Middle School Student Guide for Classroom Technology
This week in Advisory, we covered expectations for technology use. Middle school students have access to Macbook laptops during classes to enhance education, support collaborative projects, and build digital skills. Because laptops are vital for learning, school staff expect all students to show a high level of responsibility when using school devices. Taking good care of your laptop helps make sure it works every day and avoids expensive repairs.
Device Custody and Daily Routines
  • Assigned units only: Always use the exact Macbook assigned to you by your teacher. Never swap laptops with a classmate, borrow a device without checking it out, or leave your device unattended.
  • The cart checkout: When retrieving or returning your device to the classroom charging cart, guide it into its slot carefully. Plug in the charging cable straight so the pins do not bend or break.
  • No customizations: Do not put stickers, tape, or drawings or markings of any kind on your laptop or keyboard.
Digital Citizenship & Appropriate Use
  • Use it for schoolwork. Your MacBook is for learning. Do not visit unapproved gaming websites, stream unauthorized videos, or try to get around the school's internet filters.
  • Report problems right away. If your laptop isn't working correctly or gets damaged, tell your teacher as soon as possible. Reporting small problems early can help prevent bigger ones.
  • Respect account privacy.  Never go into another student's account, files, or apps. If someone before you forgot to log out, treat their work with respect: log them out right away without touching anything, and then log into your own profile.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ACCOUNTABILITY NOTICE
If a laptop is damaged because it was not handled carefully, such as a broken screen, liquid spill, or missing parts, your teachers and principals will document and discuss with you.

Treat the Macbook you check out with care so it stays in good condition for everyone to use.
Next year, students who damage devices may need fo pay for repair or replacement. The following table shows how much it costs the district to replace student devices that are used in our classrooms. This information is provided for context, so students and families can understand the impact of broken or lost devices on the district budget.

Approximate Replacement Values
Charging cable: $19
MacBook - $29 Charging brick
MacBook Neo - $599

On Monday in Advisory, students will be given a Technology Use Agreement to be signed by the student and the guardian. These should be returned to their Advisory teacher by Monday Nov. 2. The Advisory class that has the most returned by Nov. 2 will receive Muffin Tops from Dutch Bros!

Attendance in Middle School Matters

Pay Attention to Attendance
Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s social and academic development.

Even as children grow more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school and understand how attendance benefits their health and success in school and beyond.

Did you know?
•  Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged and on track to graduation.
•  Frequent absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, dealing with a bully or facing some other difficulty.
•  By 6th grade, chronic absence (missing 10%, or 2 days each month) is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
•  By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.

What you can do make school attendance a priority

•  Talk about the opportunities available when your teen or preteen shows up to school every day.
•  Help your middle and high schoolers maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting enough sleep.
 • Consider limiting use of devices if they interfere with sleep.
• Try not to schedule non-urgent medical appointments during the school day. • Help your student to stay healthy.
•  If your children must stay home because they are sick, make sure they have asked teachers for materials to make up for the missed learning time in the classroom. Help your student stay engaged
   •  Monitor your child’s academic progress and seek help from teachers, school counselors or tutors when necessary. Provide teachers with your contact information.
 •  Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated.
 •  Encourage your child to join meaningful after-school activities, including sports and clubs.
 •  If you notice signs of anxiety, support your middle and high schoolers, and if needed, seek advice from your school or health-care provider.

Friday Night Football at NEHS

We appreciate the community support and enthusiasm for our North Eugene football games. However, there is a history of challenges related to student behavior, primarily from our younger attendees who often attend without parent supervision during the games.
Supervised Attendance for Middle School and Under Students:
To enhance safety and the overall experience for our younger community members, middle school-aged and under students are required to be accompanied by their parents or another responsible adult. We believe this measure will ensure that our younger fans have the guidance and support they need to enjoy the games responsibly. Students without their parents or another responsible adult will not be allowed into Friday Night Football Games.
We value your support and participation in our community events, and we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming games. Let us come together to celebrate our local student athletes, build lasting connections, and ensure that these events remain a source of pride and unity for years to come. We greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work together to enhance the experience for all members of our community.

Fidgets and Toys at School

Fidgets and Toys at School
Fidgets such as Nee Doh's are becoming very popular at school. Fidgets can be helpful for many students to help them stay focused and possibly reduce anxiety. Unfortunately, they can also create issues at school when not used for their functional purpose. We have noticed students throwing them, breaking them open or cutting them open to expose the sticky inside, and also stealing from each other causing disruptions in classrooms and hallways. Other common toys at school such as stuffies and tech decks have also led to similar issues.

When a student is not using the fidget for its functional purpose or if causes a disruption to their learning or others at school, it will be confiscated by the staff member and brought to the office. A guardian can make arrangements to come pick up the item from the main office.

We realize that some students need sensory tools to be more successful, and we want to continue to support the individual needs of our students as much as possible. Please reinforce these expectations with your student.

Cell Phone Policy
Reminders:
  1. First time: Student receives a warning
  2. Second time: The parent will be called to pick it up in the office.
  3. Third time: Parent will be called, and the student will need to turn in phone to the office every day.
From the time students enter the school building until the time that they leave the building personal electronic devices are expected to be kept off and in their lockers this pertains to
  • Cell phones
  • Smart watches
  • Headphones/earbuds
  • Tablets
  • Video games
  • Any device that connects to the internet

Kelly Middle School Fragrance-Free Zone
Several of our staff and students react to fragrances in the environment at school. In the past, we have been a fragrance-free school to respect those staff and students who experience negative health reactions to fragrances in the environment.
Please speak with your student about NOT bringing ANY sprays to school and not using ANY spray products during the school day. This is a courtesy to others. We hope to have your support for a fragrance-free school environment for all staff and students.
